Student Employment Opportunities

Dining Services at the University of Maryland offers two types of employment opportunities for students: Regular Student Employment and Federal Work Study (FWS). These positions provide flexible hours, competitive pay, opportunities for advancement, and the chance to gain valuable experience while working in a dynamic campus environment.

Regular Student Employment

Federal Work Study (FWS)

FWS is a federally subsidized program for undergraduate and graduate students who qualify through the Office of Student Financial Aid. To participate, students must meet eligibility criteria established by the office.

Where to work?

  • Locations: Yahentamitsi, South Campus Dining Hall, 251 North, Jones-Hill House
  • Perks: Hours available every day, early and late. Work close to your room
  • Roles: Serving, patio, cooking, dishwashing, dining room, greeter
  • Locations: Good Tidings Catering, Goodies To Go
  • Perks: Pick your own schedule by signing up for events on campus
  • Roles: Waitstaff, bartender, utility, driver
  • Locations: Maryland Terrapin Athletic Events
  • Perks: Work sports events and cheer for the Terps!
  • Roles: Cashier, cook, runner, driver
  • Locations:
  • Roles: Cashier, stock, utility, server, bartender, etc. 


Student team members work approximately 10 hours per week. Students are required to work during Campus Pantry operating hours, including donation and food sorting shifts and food distributions.

  1. Browse Available Jobs: Review the student job descriptions on our website to find a position that fits your interests and schedule.
  2. Download and Fill Out the DS Student Application:
  3. Submit the Application: Take your completed application to the manager at the location where you wish to work, or email it to schrimpe@umd.edu, and we will forward it to locations that are currently hiring.
  4. Interested in the Student Leader Position?: Complete the Student Leader application form.

Dining Services Scholarships

Dining Services also offers scholarships to outstanding student employees:

  • Emma Powers Award: Recognizes the outstanding student employee of the year.
  • Chris Carey Award: Honors a student employee who has demonstrated exceptional customer service.
  • Patricia S. Higgins Award: Honors our former director and supports Dining Services employees or their dependents attending UMD.
